Breast cancer survivors may be able to increase their chances of making it past this condition by maintaining proper health. While good health is recommended in any situation, it is especially important for breast cancer survivors who want to avoid a recurrence of their breast cancer symptoms. Studies show that poor survival results had a noticeable correlation with poor overall health, which only serves as a warning for breast cancer survivors out there.
This study was conducted with a sample of 9,400 women who were involved with the After Breast Cancer Pooling Project. The group conducting the research was from the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center. They were all early breast cancer survivors, and they went through a health assessment at that time and then seven years later. About half the women surveyed were not in good health, and much of that had to do with high body mass index levels. This is a measurement that compares a person’s height to her weight.
The women who had poor health in the study turned out to be 27% more likely to have bad experiences during their recovery, with many of them developing a new form of breast cancer or having a reoccurrence of their old condition. 65% of these women turned out to be more susceptible to death of any kind, based on the research that the university conducted.
There were other problems associated with poor health and breast cancer survival. Women with low health ratings were 50% more likely to develop diabetes and high blood pressure, and they tended to be less physically active. These women often experienced sleeping problems on top of their other conditions, and they were two times as likely to develop arthritis as they aged.
The results of this study were discussed in the most recent meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Orlando, Florida. This was a significant step for the researchers because any topics brought up at these meetings are discussed in great detail. Nevertheless, this research is not always analyzed with the same scrutiny as would be found with medical journals read by professionals in the field.
The main purpose of this study was to show breast cancer survivors the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to ensure that they have a good recovery. This not only improves the patients’ wellbeing, but it also can help them avoid the risks of developing breast cancer again. Researchers aim to inspire women with low health scores to make some kinds of changes to better their lives. Even a small adjustment can make a big difference in the suffering that the person goes through in the future.
