Soy in Your Diet Has Benefits

Soy beans have produced some of the most nutritious foods and supplements in recent years than have ever been available in efforts for weight loss or overall health. They are high in proteins, replacing some meats that high in cholesterol and fats, as well as supplementing protein needs in patients with certain cancers or deficiency in dietary metabolism due to other medical conditions. Soy has long been boasted as being the “miracle food,” being easy to grow, and keeping its nutritional value with processing for certain food needs. In addition, recent discoveries have found phytochemicals that beneficial to our bodies as a whole.

Soy in Your Diet Has BenefitsSince 1909, scientists have been studying the benefits of soy in the diet in various forms, from the whole bean form to flours used in basic recipes. What they discovered is that soy is naturally good for heart health, reducing bad cholesterol levels (LDL) while raising good cholesterol levels (HDL) in the blood. This helps to prevent high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease. It also contains natural antioxidants, such as Vitamin E and lecithin that are also good for a healthy heart. Another benefit is that it contains a natural anti-clotting agent to prevent blood clots in the body that can lead to stroke or restriction of circulation in different areas of the body. Genistein, which is an isoflavone (an organic protein compound,) is also known to prevent plaque in the arteries, preventing high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.

Soy is naturally low in fats while providing the protein necessary for muscle function and bone health. This allows the body to use the built up fat on the body, reducing weight while staying healthy and not depriving the body of necessary nutrients. Some dieters use protein replacements, including soy, instead of some meats, cheeses and high-fat dairy products that can contain saturated and trans fats that contribute to obesity and high cholesterol.

Although studies still continue on how soy helps in the fight against many cancers, the current results are promising. Some cancers are linked to elevated hormone levels such estrogen in both women and men. Soy is being demonstrated as helping in fighting cancers due to the isoflavones preventing estrogen from entering cancer cells, most often preventing their growth. The information presented here only touches on one simplistic theory, but some simple research can make one more knowledgeable on the benefits of soy with other cancer preventions and treatments.

Adding soy to your diet is not difficult. For some people, it becomes a matter taste while for others, necessity. Soy flour can replace wheat flour, soy milk can be used instead of cows’ milk, and tofu is popular for many recipes or eaten alone. Food allergies and weight loss are two of the biggest reasons why some people choose to add soy in their diets, but the benefits go much farther and the changes can be so simple.
