The Truth About Xanax

Occasional sadness is a common feeling. But when the sadness lasts for more than two weeks, it is already classified as depression. The National Institute for Mental Health says that 6.7% of the US adult population experience depression and 30% of this is classified as severe. Depression may also be a result of a traumatic experience or a complication of other disorders or diseases. Depression should be taken seriously as this can affect a person’s daily performance and his relationship with other people. In line with this, several drugs are out in the market today to help treat depression, and one of them is Xanax.

Xanax Overview

Xanax is the trade name for the drug alprozam. It is a short-acting benzodiazepine which helps in the treatment of several mental disorders such as panic attacks, anxiety and depression. This drug helps promote balance and stabilize the erratic movements of chemicals in the brain. Such erratic movement is commonly known as the cause of anxiety.

The Good About Xanax

Xanax is an FDA-approved prescription drug for depression and related disorders. It is also commonly used to treat short-term anxiety such as stage fright. It is also known to relax muscles, prevent seizures, and cause sleepiness.

The Bad About Xanax

Xanax also comes with disadvantages. First of all, it may work for short-term use, but not for the long term. It can cause memory loss, worsening of depression and excessive sedation. It may also cause loss of concentration, reduced intelligence and loss of focus.

Physically, Xanax may cause increased salivation, weight gain and drowsiness.
There are several cautions one should consider before taking Xanax.

  • Xanax must not be taken by pregnant or lactating women. This product can cause harmful effects to the baby. Furthermore, alprozam may be passed on to the mother’s milk and can likewise prove harmful to the baby.
  • Consult your health care provider if you are taking Xanax with other medications or supplement. Furthermore, you should not take this drug if you have allergic reactions to alprozam or other types of benzodiazepines.
  • You should also talk to your healthcare provider if you have glaucoma, asthma, diseases of the liver, a history of depression, suicide and alcohol addiction. Xanax may increase these risks or addiction.
  • Xanax should only be taken by the person it was prescribed to. This drug is habit-forming and may worsen alcohol and drug addiction.
  • Xanax should only be taken for a prescribed period of time. When this is used for an extended period, a person may have difficulty stopping and can lead to other complications.

As an FDA-approved drug, Xanax might be an answer to depression. However, one should take these cautions to heart as mismanagement of this drug can lead to even more serious problems.
